PHILIPPA GODSALVE
Philippa Godsalve is a London based experimental musician, composer, DJ and sound artist concerned with exploring the timbral and sonic possibilities of her instrument through live performance with harp and electronics.
Inspired by human relationship to place, deep listening and complex systems in nature, Philippa Godsalve’s sound world can range from the dreamy to the demonic, spanning drone, noise, avant-folk, contemporary and ambient.
Shaped by the use of feedback, transducers, field recording and sampling, Philippa Godsalve’s music is rooted in the philosophy of free play and improvisation, embracing the incidental and incorporating prepared strings, bowed and percussive textures.
A frequent collaborator, Philippa Godsalve performs with her harp/percussion duo SCATTERISM with Anton Sconosciutto, her harp/modular synth duo with Lazy H, her DJ duo with Lebz, and has previously performed with Yoshika Colwell at State 51, St Pancras Old Church and Also Festival.
Active as a composer for film, movement, audiovisual works and installation, Philippa Godsalve has composed music for 24 speaker sound installation at London’s Vibrance Festival, for films which have screened at Chisenhale Art Place, BFI Film Festival and at the ICA, a sound and movement piece performed at Tanzquartier Wien, and worked as an arranger with composer Nick Roth on Adrian Dunbar: T.S. Eliot’s The Waste Land, performed at Queen Elizabeth Hall.
Philippa Godsalve hosts Boglands, a monthly daybreak show on Voices Radio exploring human relationship to place through experimental music.
Born in Edinburgh with Irish roots, Philippa Godsalve was taught to play music from the traditional Scottish and Irish repertoire of folk music on the harp by her mother from age 4, was later taught by award-winning harpist and composer Fraya Thomsen, and now studies Sonic Art at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
As well as her folk roots, Philippa Godsalve’s early music influences were forged in the UK bass music heavy free party scene in her hometown of Reading where she started learning to produce music at 16.
